Factors that move the number
Platform choice
Web MVPs cost 40 to 50% less than mobile MVPs because deployment is instant, no app store review, and one codebase serves desktop, tablet, and mobile browsers. If your hypothesis does not strictly require a phone in the user's pocket, start with web. You can always add a native shell later once you have users worth keeping. The exceptions are camera-first, location-first, or push-notification-dependent products where mobile is the product.
Core hypothesis type
Marketplaces are the most expensive MVP archetype because you need liquidity on both supply and demand from day one. Without it, neither side stays. SaaS and B2B tools are cleaner: one customer type, one workflow, one value proposition. Consumer apps sit in the middle, with the added challenge that user acquisition cost becomes a second variable to validate alongside the product itself.
Scope discipline
The single biggest cause of MVP budget overruns is feature creep during the build, not bad estimating. Write your v2 list before kickoff and treat it as a contract: anything on it is explicitly deferred, no matter how reasonable it sounds in week 6. Without this discipline, the average MVP grows 30 to 50% in scope between kickoff and ship date, which is exactly where the budget overruns come from.
Infrastructure choices
Managed services like Vercel, Supabase, Stripe, and Clerk handle 80% of the boring infrastructure work for a few hundred dollars per month. Building any of them yourself costs 3 to 5 times more and ships 2 to 3 times slower. The argument against managed services is vendor lock-in, but at MVP stage you should be optimizing for shipping, not for hypothetical exit costs you may never face.
Design scope
MVPs do not need a design system, brand guidelines, or motion design. One mid-level designer working in Figma for 2 to 3 weeks can produce 15 to 20 screens that are good enough to test the hypothesis. Polish, animation, and visual identity come in v1.1 after you have validated that anyone wants what you are building. Spending $20K on design before you have users is one of the most common founder mistakes.
How to reduce cost
Cut features mercilessly during scoping and again during build. The hardest decisions are the ones that feel obvious in hindsight: the dashboard, the settings page, the password reset flow. None of these test your hypothesis. If a feature is not directly required for a user to take the one core action your product is built around, it belongs in v1.1. Founders who hold this line ship in 8 weeks. Founders who do not ship in 6 months and run out of money before they learn anything.
Use off-the-shelf auth like Clerk, Supabase Auth, or Auth0. Building your own auth is a 2 to 4 week distraction that adds zero value to your product, and you will probably get it slightly wrong on the security details. Managed auth gives you email and social login, password reset, MFA, and session management in an afternoon of integration work. The cost ranges from free to $50 per month at MVP scale, which is less than one hour of engineering time.
Use Stripe Checkout instead of building custom billing. Stripe Checkout is a hosted page you redirect to: one day to integrate, ships compliant with SCA, PCI, and tax handling. Custom billing looks deceptively simple and routinely takes a month, plus ongoing maintenance for tax rules, dunning, and edge cases like prorated upgrades. Until you have hundreds of paying customers, the standard Stripe flow is better than anything you would build.
Skip the admin dashboard. For the first 100 users, your admin panel is a database client and a small set of SQL queries. You can refund, impersonate, and debug from a terminal. Building a custom admin UI is typically 150 to 200 hours of work that serves only your internal team, and you will rebuild it anyway once you know which fields and actions actually matter. Defer admin tooling until manual ops genuinely break.
Hire one senior full-stack engineer instead of a team of three mid-level engineers. Coordination overhead is brutal at small team sizes: every meeting, code review, and architecture decision multiplies. A senior engineer who has shipped 3 to 5 MVPs already moves faster solo than a 3-person team coordinating in Slack. The math is roughly equal cost, half the calendar time, and a much higher chance of shipping something coherent. Add the second engineer once the architecture is set.
Stay on web until you have traction. Mobile apps add 60 to 100% to your MVP cost, plus app store review, signing, and platform-specific bugs. The exceptions are real but narrow: camera-first products, location-first products, or apps that depend on push notifications as the core UX. Everything else is better as a responsive web app at MVP stage. You can ship a Capacitor or PWA wrapper later if you need a home screen icon.

Rebuild signals: new features keep breaking old ones, load times push users out, the original framework blocks growth, or you have 10× the users you designed for. Most MVPs need partial rewrites by 12–18 months. Plan for it.
