How we choose the right stack for your project

We do not have a default framework. Here is how we make technology decisions for a real client project.

What language should the backend use?

TypeScript with Node.js

Why

The client's in-house team knows JavaScript. Using TypeScript means they can maintain the code after handoff without learning a new language. Shared types between frontend and backend reduce bugs.

Alternatives Considered

We considered Go for performance and Python for data work. Both are good options, but developer handoff mattered more than raw speed for this project.

How should we handle the database?

PostgreSQL with Prisma ORM

Why

Relational data with complex queries. PostgreSQL handles both well and is free. Prisma gives us type-safe queries and automatic migrations, which means fewer database bugs in production.

Alternatives Considered

MongoDB was an option for its flexibility, but the data model was clearly relational. We would have spent more time working around document limitations than we saved in schema flexibility.

Where should we host this?

Vercel for frontend, Railway for backend

Why

Fast deployments, automatic previews for pull requests, and zero DevOps overhead. The client does not have a dedicated ops team, so managed hosting saves them from hiring one.

Alternatives Considered

AWS gives more control but requires DevOps expertise. For this team size and traffic level, managed platforms are the pragmatic choice.

Build from scratch or use a framework?

Next.js with a custom component library

Why

Next.js gives us server-side rendering for SEO, API routes for the backend, and a huge ecosystem. The custom component library means the UI matches the brand exactly without fighting a pre-built design system.

Alternatives Considered

Remix and SvelteKit are strong alternatives. We chose Next.js because the client's team had existing React experience, which makes long-term maintenance realistic.
