Best AI Customer Support Agents: 8 Ranked on Handoff, Not Hype

Disclosure: Heyy, Chatbase, Weav, Watermelon, and Chipp sit on our Dub partner shortlist. Until those programs approve, every product link is the official vendor URL. If a partner link replaces one later, we will mark it.

Chatbase Hobby is $32 a month on the yearly toggle we pulled on 17 August 2026: 700 message credits, two seats, no Helpdesk. Intercom Fin bills $0.99 per outcome on top of a $29 seat, and Zendesk Suite Team is $55 per agent while still metering automated resolutions.

Score best AI customer support agents on two things a buyer feels: handoff context, and a visible source article.

These are desks you buy, not agent frameworks you assemble, not coding agents, and not personal assistants.

Which AI customer support agent should you buy?

Buy Intercom Fin if you need a same-inbox handoff; buy Zendesk AI if customers must see the article. We opened the official Intercom pricing and Zendesk pricing pages on 17 August 2026, then scored the six other tools the same way: escalation quality first, citation second.

If you are still mapping the wider AI agents for business category, this table is the support-desk slice.

How do you pick a support agent without another feature table?

Two checks decide the buy: does the handoff keep context, and does the customer see the article. That is the useful half of "how can AI help customer service." Channel lists and model names do not tell you whether the human inherits the thread.

Walk the tree in order.

Stop at the first yes.

  1. Already paying for Zendesk or Intercom? Turn on the native AI customer support agent before you add a third inbox.
  2. Need the customer to open the help article you answered from? Zendesk article recommendation is the only official customer-visible cite we could pin.
  3. Live on WhatsApp, Instagram, or Messenger more than email? Heyy or Watermelon. Fin's $29 seat is the wrong story.
  4. Need something live under $50 this week? Weav Plus at $29, or Chatbase Hobby at $32 (Hobby has no Helpdesk).
  5. Want a studio that also ships internal apps? Chipp. It is not a queue, and it is not a personal assistant.
  6. High-volume CX with a procurement cycle? Ada. There is no self-serve card.

Voice and phone stacks are a different purchase. If the search was actually "best AI voice agents for customer support," use the open-source voice agent frameworks post instead of this list.

Does Intercom Fin charge you when the customer asks for a human?

Default escalates cost $0; a configured Procedure handoff bills $0.99 once per conversation. Intercom's outcomes article (updated late July 2026) is unusually honest: frustration, "talk to a person," workspace rules, and a failed Procedure do not bill.

That is the handoff story.

Fin and the human share one Inbox and one customer record, so the dump-and-repeat failure is rarer than on widget-only bots. Citation is weaker for the customer. Teammates get Answer inspection (which sources shaped the reply). We did not find a named public-docs feature that pins a help-article chip on every customer bubble.

qualification_usd: 9.99
default_escalate_ask_for_human_usd: 0
essential_seat_annual_usd: 29
fin_standalone_minimum_outcomes: 50

$9.99 qualification is the landmine if you point Fin at sales routing. Service teams that only resolve tickets never hit it.

What does Zendesk Suite Team actually meter?

Suite Team is $55 per agent per month and includes only 5 automated resolutions per agent. The public pricing page sells "AI Agents" inside every Suite plan. The automated resolutions article is where the meter lives: Team 5 AR/agent/month, Professional 10, Enterprise 15, and a 10,000 yearly cap on the default allocation.

Zendesk does not print a public dollar-per-resolution on that pricing page. Third-party blogs invent $1.50 / $2.00. We are not repeating a number we could not fetch from Zendesk.

On 18 May 2026 Zendesk shipped resolution tiers. Assisted escalation (the bot collected data, then a human finished) does not consume the allowance.

That is a real handoff design, not a slogan.

Suite Professional$115/agent10 / agent / monthadd-on $50
Suite Enterprise + CopilotSales15 / agent / monthbundled in that SKU

Citation win: article recommendation. A Zendesk reply can put the Help Center URL in the customer's hands. That is the bar the rest of this list mostly fails.

Can Weav hand off context on the $29 plan?

Plus at $29 lists contextual handoff; the 1 MB training cap is the real limit. Weav's pricing matrix marks contextual escalation on Plus, Pro, and Max, next to a unified inbox for chat and email.

500 AI messages sit on Plus.

The next 1,000 credits are $49 and roll over. An extra teammate is $29. Removing branding is $99 per platform. Pro jumps to $119 and 5,000 messages with auto-retrain. Weav trains on website, text, Q&A, files, and video. Customer-facing article chips are not on the matrix.

Treat it as a cheap ai support chatbot with a documented handoff, not as a Zendesk Help Center clone.

  1. Start Plus at $29 with 500 messages included.
  2. At 800 messages, buy one $49 credit pack (700 leftover roll over).
  3. Skip a second Plus seat at $29; two extras already beat Pro's $119.

Does Chatbase show the source article to the customer?

Public docs do not ship a customer-facing citation chip; Pro only adds workspace source suggestions. Chatbase pricing (yearly toggle, 17 August 2026) is otherwise the cleanest self-serve ladder here.

Hobby at $32 is a demo with 700 credits and two members. Helpdesk and Zendesk/Stripe integrations start at Standard, $120. Pro at $400 adds "Sources suggestions" and tickets-as-a-source. Extra credits are $40 per 1,000. Extra agents are $300 per year. Removing the badge is $1,188 per year.

Standard $120 4,000 credits Helpdesk + Voice
Pro $400 15,000 credits Sources suggestions

Handoff is real once you pay for Standard: native Helpdesk, plus escalate into a connected desk. Citation for the customer is the gap. Training sources (files, crawl, Notion, tickets) are not the same as a visible article link. If you care about retrieval quality more than the widget, read RAG tools and keep Chatbase as the front door.

Why is a Watermelon conversation a 96-hour window?

Every message in a 96-hour window bills as one conversation, including your own test chats. Watermelon's pricing FAQ is explicit: 4 days, then a new conversation. Hit the monthly cap and the agent pauses until you buy 250 extra conversations for €25 or wait for renewal.

That math changes "€99 looks cheap."

A messy refund thread that dribbles across five days is two conversations. So is the afternoon you spent clicking the widget in staging.

PlanPrice / moConversationsAI Actions (handoff lives here)
Free€0500
Starter€992501
Advanced€1995005
Business€3991,00010

Handoff is an AI Action, so Free cannot do it. Starter can. Inbox takeover is listed. Yearly billing cuts 15%. GDPR export and branding removal wait for Business. Citation chips are not the pitch; scrape + upload is.

Is Heyy a knowledge-base agent or a WhatsApp inbox?

Heyy is a WhatsApp-first shared inbox at $49, not a help-center citation engine. Heyy pricing on 17 August 2026: Hobby $49 monthly or $41 yearly, 1,000 credits, one AI Employee, three channels, shared inbox, API.

WhatsApp messages and extra credits are separate PDFs on the same page. Easy to miss.

Hobby $49/mo ($41 yearly) 1 user 1,000 credits 3 channels
Pro $149/mo ($125 yearly) 5 users 6,000 credits
Ultra $499/mo ($416 yearly) 10 users 20,000 credits

Use Heyy when the ticket starts on Instagram or WhatsApp and a human sits in the same inbox. Do not buy it to replace a Help Center. It will not cite a source article, because that is not the product.

Why does Ada hide the price?

Ada published $0 list prices on 17 August 2026; the buy path is a sales quote. The official site is ada.cx. Our fetch hit a Cloudflare challenge. Independent writeups agree on one fact only: you talk to sales.

public_monthly_usd: none
self_serve_checkout: none
verified_handoff_spec: not on a public pricing page
verified_citation_chip: not on a public pricing page

Rank 6 is the honest slot.

Ada is a real enterprise overlay used at CX scale. It is also the only name here you cannot price before a call. If you need a number this week, you are on Fin, Zendesk, Weav, or Chatbase.

Is Chipp a customer support desk?

Chipp's pricing page leads at $299 Studio Pro because it sells a builder, not a ticket queue. chipp.ai/pricing (17 August 2026) opens on Studio Pro $299 plus usage over $100, Priority at $2,500, and Embedded at $12,500. The docs usage page still mentions a $29 Builder plan. A buyer who lands on /pricing/ never sees $29 first.

Studio Pro $299Self-serve builder, $100 usage inYou invent handoff
Priority $2,500Slack + Cody ticketsStill a builder
Embedded $12,500Their team inside yoursCustom install

Chipp will happily host a support-shaped agent. Citation and escalation are whatever you wire. If you wanted coding agents or a consumer personal assistant, you are in the wrong aisle. If you wanted a queue with a cited article and a human on the same thread, buy Fin or Zendesk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will AI replace call center agents?

No. These eight products deflect FAQ and policy questions. They still hand hard, angry, or high-risk threads to people. Voice and phone replacement is a separate stack; start with open-source voice agent frameworks if that is the actual job. A text widget that cites a help article does not close a contact center.

Is Intercom Fin cheaper than Zendesk AI?

Often, if you do not already own Zendesk seats. Fin standalone is $0.99 per outcome with a 50-outcome floor and no seat on an existing helpdesk. Zendesk Suite Team is $55 per agent plus a small included AR allotment, and Copilot is another $50. Five Zendesk agents on Suite Team are $275 before any overage. Five Fin outcomes a day at $0.99 is about $149 a month, before an Intercom seat if you also buy the inbox.

Do these AI support chatbots cite the source article?

Zendesk can put a Help Center link in front of the customer. Fin grounds answers in Knowledge Hub content and shows sources to teammates via Answer inspection. Chatbase Pro suggests sources inside the workspace. Weav, Watermelon, Heyy, Ada, and Chipp either train on files or leave citation to whatever you build. Training on a URL is not the same as citing it.

What is the cheapest AI customer support agent on this list?

Weav Lite is $0 for 20 messages. Chatbase Free is $0 for 50 credits (the agent is deleted after 14 idle days). Watermelon Free is €0 for 50 conversations, with no handoff Action. The cheapest paid desk that documents a contextual handoff is Weav Plus at $29. Chatbase Hobby at $32 has no Helpdesk.

Can Chatbase replace a Zendesk or Intercom inbox?

Not on Hobby. Standard at $120 adds Chatbase Helpdesk, Voice, and the Zendesk integration, which is a sideload more than a rip-and-replace. If the team already lives in Zendesk or Intercom, turn on that vendor's agent first. Chatbase wins when you want a crawl-and-go ai support chatbot and will grow into Helpdesk later.
