Multi-tenancy architecture
Shared-database multi-tenancy with row-level security is the cheapest model and works well up to a few thousand customers. Single-tenant isolated deployments cost 20 to 30% more per customer to operate but are often required for enterprise sales where data residency and isolation are contract conditions. Hybrid offerings (multi-tenant by default, single-tenant for enterprise) cost the most upfront but unlock the largest deal sizes.
Billing infrastructure
Use Stripe or Lemonsqueezy. Custom billing looks like a four to six week build and turns into an 18-month ongoing project once you hit tax compliance, dunning, prorations, refunds, dispute handling, and SCA. We have never seen a custom billing system that paid back its build cost. Stripe charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction, which is cheaper than the engineer-years required to match what it does.
Enterprise-readiness
SSO via SAML or OIDC, audit logs, role-based access control, custom MSAs, and security questionnaires each take 40 to 80 hours individually. Together they add 20 to 30% to your build cost and become a hard requirement once you start selling deals over $50K per year. Build them speculatively and you waste money. Build them too late and you lose deals during procurement.
Admin tooling
Internal admin dashboards typically consume 20 to 30% of total build hours and are easy to underestimate because end users never see them. You need to refund, impersonate, debug failed payments, and override permissions constantly once you have real customers. Skipping admin tooling means your engineers field every support ticket personally, which gets expensive fast and trains nobody on the product.
Monthly operating cost
Infrastructure, observability, support tooling, and analytics typically run $2K to $15K per month at 1K to 50K monthly active users. The rough rule of thumb at scale is $0.05 to $0.20 per MAU per month. The variance comes from how much you self-host versus how many SaaS tools you stack: Datadog, Segment, Intercom, Linear, and the like add up faster than founders expect.
How to reduce cost
Combine Stripe for billing, Clerk for auth, and Supabase or Neon for the database to get the three hardest parts of a SaaS off your plate. This stack handles authentication, payment processing, subscription management, and database hosting for under $200 per month at MVP scale. The alternative is 8 to 12 weeks of engineering on infrastructure that does not differentiate your product. Vendor lock-in is real but minor: each piece can be swapped later, and at MVP stage you should be optimizing for shipping fast, not for hypothetical migration costs.
Start single-tenant and convert to multi-tenant only after validation. Single-tenant means each customer gets their own isolated deployment or schema, which is simpler to reason about, simpler to debug, and acceptable for the first 10 to 20 customers. Converting to multi-tenant later costs 30 to 50% of the original build, but it forces you to design the conversion based on real usage patterns rather than guesses. Most founders over-engineer multi-tenancy from day one and regret it.
Skip SSO, SAML, audit logs, and the rest of the enterprise checklist until you have a deal that genuinely requires them. The first time a customer asks "do you support SAML?" you can ship it in a sprint. Building it speculatively means 80 to 200 hours of work that no current customer needs and that gets stale before anyone uses it. Enterprise readiness is funded by enterprise deals, not the other way around.
Pick Next.js, Rails, or Django for the framework. All three have huge talent pools, mature ecosystems, and patterns specifically tuned for SaaS: authentication, multi-tenancy, background jobs, and admin tooling are well-trodden in each. RedwoodJS and Phoenix are nice but harder to hire for. Avoid the temptation to pick something exotic because the tech blog you read called it the future. Boring tech ships faster.
Skip the mobile app. Most B2B SaaS users work on desktop, and you can serve mobile use cases adequately with a responsive web app. Building a native mobile app adds $80K to $200K and 2 to 4 months to your timeline. Add it in v2 only if your analytics show that more than 30% of usage is mobile or your specific use case (like a field-service tool) requires it. Almost every SaaS founder we work with thinks they need a mobile app at launch and almost none of them actually do.
Price 2 to 3 times higher than feels comfortable. Under-pricing is the most common SaaS mistake and the hardest to fix later because raising prices on existing customers is messy. SaaS economics require enough margin to cover customer acquisition, support, infrastructure, and the eventual churn. A $29 per month plan needs roughly 100 customers to cover one full-time engineer. A $299 per month plan needs 10. Charge for the value you deliver, not the cost of running the software.
