Application type
Internal tools are the cheapest; no marketing pages, simpler UX, smaller user base. Customer-facing apps add polish, performance, and SEO requirements. SaaS adds multi-tenancy, billing, RBAC. Marketplaces add two-sided trust systems, dispute resolution, and reputation.
Framework choice
Next.js and Django are cheapest in 2026; large talent pool, mature ecosystems, strong defaults. Ruby on Rails is comparable. .NET is slightly more expensive (higher rates, smaller pool). Avoid niche frameworks unless the team specializes in them.
Integration count

How to reduce cost
Start with Next.js plus a managed Postgres database like Supabase, Neon, or PlanetScale. This stack ships faster than almost anything else in 2026 because most of the hard infrastructure problems are already solved: authentication, file storage, real-time subscriptions, and connection pooling all come built in. You skip 4 to 8 weeks of DevOps and platform setup and your engineers focus on product code. The risk is vendor lock-in, which is real but rarely worth optimizing for before you have customers.
Real-time features like websockets, presence, and live collaboration each add 80 to 160 hours and significant infrastructure complexity. Most products do not need them at launch. Ask whether your users would actually notice a 5-second delay versus an instant update. For dashboards, project tools, and CRMs the answer is usually no. For chat or collaborative editing it is yes. Building real-time first means committing to managed services like Pusher or Ably, or hiring DevOps expertise you may not need yet.
Use Stripe Checkout or Lemonsqueezy for billing instead of building your own. Custom billing looks like a few weeks of work and turns into a year of edge cases: tax calculation, dunning, prorations, refunds, invoice PDFs, and SCA compliance. Stripe handles all of it for 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction, which is cheaper than the engineer time you would spend matching its feature set. We have never seen a custom billing system that paid back the build cost.
Adopt shadcn/ui or a similar pre-built component library instead of building a design system from scratch. You get 40 to 50 production-quality components with consistent styling, accessibility, and dark mode out of the box. Design hours drop from 200 to 60, and your engineers stop bikeshedding button states. Custom design still matters for landing pages and marketing, but for the logged-in product, users do not care if your dropdown looks unique. They care if it works.
Pick one compliance framework and finish it before starting the next. Most teams try to chase SOC 2, GDPR, ISO 27001, and HIPAA simultaneously and end up with all four half-done. Start with SOC 2 if you sell to US companies, ISO 27001 for EU enterprise, HIPAA for health data. Each adds 15 to 30% to your build cost in audit trails, encryption, and access controls. Doing them sequentially means the first one funds the next.
Ship a monolith, not microservices. The microservices argument made sense at scale: Netflix, Uber, Amazon. At your scale, a single Next.js or Django app deployed to one server outperforms a microservices architecture on every dimension that matters: build cost, deploy complexity, debugging, and developer onboarding. Microservices become useful around 15 to 25 engineers when team coordination breaks down. Until then they multiply infrastructure cost without paying anything back.
